Cyber security – just how much of a threat is it really and as small businesses here in the UK, how concerned should we be? How’s this for a taste of reality……
Ginni Rometty, IBM’s chairman, president and CEO had the following to say at a 2015 IBM Security Summit in New York City when she addressed CISOs, CIOs and CEOs from 123 companies in 24 industries:
“We believe that data is the phenomenon of our time. It is the world’s new natural resource. It is the new basis of competitive advantage, and it is transforming every profession and industry. If all of this is true—even inevitable—then cybercrime, by definition, is the greatest threat to every profession, every industry, every company in the world.”
In April 2019, the BBC ran an article based on research from Hiscox. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-48017943 The insurer found 55% of UK firms had faced an attack in 2019, up from 40% last year. The report went on to say that almost three quarters of firms were ranked as “novices” in terms of cyber readiness and that a lot of businesses “incorrectly felt that they weren’t at risk”.
